Help a good cause!

Sun Aug 23, 2009, 2:39 AM
For all those out there that do not know her, :icontheladypegasus: is doing something fantastic and I encourage anyone who reads this to support it. The below information is from her journal ( [link] if you want to go there directly).
Quote:
"Hi everyone.

We now have some awesome things brewing!

Some of you may already be aware that I'm participating in the Relay for Life, an event run by the Cancer Council to celebrate cancer survival.

The event is a 24 hour marathon representing a day in the life of a victim of cancer. Participants, who are part of a team, take turns in doing their part for the full 24 hours by doing laps of the designated events ground.

As part of my participation in this event, I'm trying to raise as much money as I can!

Right now, I'd appreciate any donation, no matter how small! You can help this cause by giving a donation the following link [link]

Some fantastic artists have offered their time and talents! Keep your eye on the column over to the right for some of the great thigns that will be put up for grabs over the following weeks. If there are any artists or users on dA who would be willing to participate by offering art or commissions to help raise money for this cause, please do not hesitate in sending me a note!

If anyone else has any idea how I can raise more money, let me know! I'm open to suggestions!

This journal will be updated as soon as any changes have been made. Please dig deep and help support people who have had their lives affected by cancer. Cancer does not discriminate between young and old, male or female, religious beliefs or skin colour. It not only affects the lives of those who are victims, but their family and friends. Help us make a difference!

The money raised goes towards:

Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20
Our specialist cancer nurses assist more than 20,000 people across the state each year with cancer information and support. For the cost of a local call from anywhere in NSW, the Helpline provides information on all aspects of cancer, practical and emotional support, and details of support groups and other services in your local area.

Support and Information Pack
A free pack containing vital information for people recently diagnosed with cancer, including a diary for recording appointments and other important information and a local support services directory. Available from your local cancer treatment centre or by ringing the Helpline on 13 11 20.

Cancer research
The Cancer Council’s mission is to defeat cancer and we see research as playing a vital role. This year we have added ten new projects to our vibrant external grants and we continue to expand our internal research program. Bringing promising research out of the lab and into treatment centres is another important priority and our commitment to clinical trials grows and grows.

We are confident that funding quality research and researchers today will produce the breakthroughs we need to ensure the ongoing improvements in preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer. In 2005, The Cancer Council is spending around $7.4 million on internal and external research including a number of interstate and international collaborations.

One-to-one support
Cancer Council Connect is a one-to-one peer support program which connects you with a specially trained volunteer who has been through a similar cancer and treatment experience and understands what you’re going through. Call the Helpline on 13 11 20 for details.

Telephone group counselling
A great option for people living in remote areas, or for those who are isolated by their illness or prefer not to meet face to face. Groups ‘meet’ over the phone with others in a similar situation, supported by two highly-skilled facilitators. Groups are offered for adults with cancer and their carers, parents with cancer who need support in talking with their children, and young people aged 10-18 who have a parent with cancer.

Living with Cancer Programs
Workshops for cancer patients and their carers are held over several weeks offering practical information and discussion around treatment decisions, diet and exercise, relationships, sexuality and coping strategies. Available in six languages. Ring 13 11 20 to find out where your nearest program is being run.

Multicultural Cancer Information Service
A range of services available in five languages (Greek, Italian, Arabic, Cantonese and Mandarin) including a confidential Helpline, community information sessions, Living with Cancer Programs and information booklets. Call our Multicultural Cancer Information consultants for more information.

Cantonese and Mandarin 1300 300 935
Greek 1300 301 449

Cancer Information Library
A comprehensive collection of books, journals, videos and audiotapes about cancer, available to the general public and health professionals. Visit the library in Woolloomooloo or call the Helpline on 13 11 20 to borrow books or tapes by post.

Understanding Cancer series

Cancer clinical trials
A program that funds nurses in hospitals throughout NSW to support patients in clinical trials testing new and better ways to prevent and treat cancer. Patients who take part in cancer trials may often benefit by getting extra high quality care and attention as well as information about their disease and treatment. For more information call the Helpline on 13 11 20."
